This specimen was part of lot 29122 in Heritage sale 3022 (New York, January 2013), which sold for $1,057.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "George VI Proof Set 1948, the nine coin set featuring the Farthing through the 5 Shillings. A choice set with rich toning on the silver types. Sold in the original mint case." The crown or five shillings was struck in South Africa 1923-60. It was 0.800 fine silver until 1950 and 0.500 fine thereafter. This is the first date to bear the obverse legend "GEORGIUS SEXTUS REX." The crown is more common than the shilling, florin or half crown for 1948.
Recorded mintage: 780,000 plus 1,000 proofs.
Specification: 28.27 g, 0.800 fine silver.
Catalog reference: KM 40.1, KM-PS20 (proof set).
