This specimen was part of lot 29123 in Heritage sale 3022 (New York, January 2013), which sold for $1,175. The catalog description^[1] noted, "George VI Proof Set 1949, the nine coin set in the original mint case. Always popular as the Shilling is a Proof only date with a mintage of 800." The crown or five shillings was struck in South Africa 1947-60. It was 0.800 fine silver until 1950 and 0.500 fine thereafter. The crown is more common than the shilling, florin or half crown for 1949.

Recorded mintage: 535,000 plus 2,000 proofs.

Specification: 28.27 g, 0.800 fine silver, 38.8 mm diameter.
