South Africa 1948 2-1/2 shillings

This specimen was part of lot 29122 in Heritage sale 3022 (New York, January 2013), which sold for $1,057.50. The catalog description^[1] noted, "George VI Proof Set 1948, the nine coin set featuring the Farthing through the 5 Shillings. A choice set with rich toning on the silver types. Sold in the original mint case." The half crown or 2½ shillings was struck in South Africa 1923-60. It was 0.800 fine silver until 1950 and 0.500 fine thereafter. This was the first date to bear the obverse legend "GEORGIUS SEXTUS REX."

Recorded mintage: 1,600 plus 1,120 proofs.

Specification: 14.14 g, 0.800 fine silver, 32.3 mm diameter.
