Salzburg 1618 2 thaler Dav-3490
This specimen was lot 2562 in Goldberg sale 91 (Los Angeles, June 2016), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Austria: Salzburg. 2 Talers, 1618 NGC EF. Marcus Sitticus von Hohenems, 1612-1619. Hatted arms. Reverse: Saint on throne. Toned. Rare. NGC graded Extremely Fine, Details (Repaired)." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1614-19 along with a klippe single thaler (KM 39). Both are expensive.
