Künker sale 400, lot 573

This specimen was lot 573 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €8,500 (about US$11,027 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KÖNIGREICH DER NIEDERLANDE, Wilhelm II. 1840-1849. 2 1/2 Gulden 1843, Utrecht. Mit vertiefter Randschrift: GOD * ZY * MET * ONS · *. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung PF 63 CAMEO (2125786-035). Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Prachtexemplar. Polierte Platte, min. berührt. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 271, Berlin 2016, Nr. 547 und der Sammlung Annemarie und Gerd Köhlmoos, Auktion Sincona AG 76, Zürich 2022, Nr. 1318. (kingdom of the Netherlands, William II, 1840-49, 2½ gulden of 1843, Utrecht mint, edge lettered "GOD * ZY * MET * ONS ·". Graded NGC PF 63 CAMEO, very rare in this quality. Choice example, polished fields, a few hairlines.)"

This is a better date of a type struck 1841-49 with various privy marks. Despite the large mintage, this type is priced substantially higher than the succeeding type of William III (KM 82, struck 1849-74). It superseded the three gulden of 1817-32. After the final issue of 1874, no 2½ gulden were issued until 1898. The 0.945 fine alloy seems to be unique to the Netherlands.

Recorded mintage: 742,659 plus proofs.

Specification: 25 g, 0.945 fine silver, 38 mm diameter, lettered edge.

Catalog reference: KM 69 (circulation issue), KM 69.2 (proof), Dav-235; LSchulman (Handboek) 385 (508) R1; Slg. L. S. Beuth, Teil 1 (Auktion Künker/L. Schulman 393) 3407.
