Aureo sale 238, lot 471

This specimen was lot 471 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 75 euro (about US$119 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1814. Potosí. PJ. 8 reales. Leves rayitas. MBC+/EBC-. (eight reales of 1813, Potosí mint. A few light marks, choice very fine to extremely fine.)"

Assayer PJ is recorded for the years 1803-24. The Potosí mint changed hands several times during 1813-15 between the Argentines (republicans) and Bolivians (royalists). The royalists managed to hold the mint long enough in 1814 to issue a substantial number of these pesos. An 1814/13 overdate is known.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: 27.07 g, .896 fine, .780 ASW.

Catalog reference: Cal. 603, KM 84.
