Sincona sale 9, lot 3916

This specimen was lot 3916 in Sincona sale 9 (Zurich, October 2012), where it sold for 5500 CHF (about US$6,956 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Bayern, Königreich Ludwig III. 1913-1918. 20 Mark 1914. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Kingdom of Bavaria, Louis III, 1913-18, twenty mark of 1914, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This type is very rare, having never been officially released. Ludwig III succeeded his insane cousin Otto in 1913. This is the last gold twenty mark from Bavaria.

Recorded mintage: 533,000 plus a few proofs.

Specification: 7.96 g, .900 fine gold, .230 troy oz AGW.
