Ponterio sale 173, lot 1702
Sweden 1740 4 daler rev Ponterio 173-1702.jpg

This specimen was lot 1702 in Ponterio sale 173 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $1,762. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. 4 Daler Plate Money, 1740. Frederik I (1720-51). All stamps present however only one full date visible and no complete monograms. The plate itself shows very little wear with nearly uniform color and tone. Dark patina. VERY FINE. Alicia & Sid Belzberg Collection." In the pre-reform Swedish coinage, 8 öre = 1 mark and 96 öre = 1 riksdaler. This type was issued 1720-46 and is the most common four daler plate. Millions were made but most were melted down to make other copper or bronze objects.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: KM-PM74; AAH-203.
