Saxe-Coburg-Gotha 1841-G 2 thaler Dav-819

Kunker sale 263, part of lot 1340

This specimen was part of lot 1340 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), which sold for €1,100 (about US$1,421 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"SACHSEN-COBURG UND GOTHA, HERZOGTUM Ernst I. 1826-1844. Vereinsdoppeltaler 1841, 1842. 2 Stück., Kl. Randfehler (1x), sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Ernest I, 1826-44, double union thaler of 1841 and 1842, two pieces, one with an edge crack, very fine.)"

In 1826, the duke exchanged Saalfeld for Gotha and assumed the title of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. This is the first double thaler from the new state. Ernest's younger son Albert married queen Victoria of Britain and became Prince Consort.
