Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73297
SB223-73297r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73297 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. 6 Mariengroschen (1/6 Taler), 1769-IAP. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg III (George III of Great Britain). PCGS MS-61. An interesting wildman minor, this Mint State representative features a bit of an odd shape to the shaggy forest dweller, in that his right leg is much smaller in comparison to his left. Furthermore, his torso in general is seemingly greatly out of proportions with the remainder of his body. As such, clearly not engraved by an artist versed on the anatomy of the human body. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1762-84. We also note KM 342, with a St. Andrew reverse, dated 1769-IWS. Mintmaster IAP is listed for 1763-73.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-348; Welter-2841.
