Dominican Republic 1937 10 centavos
This specimen was part of lot 23734 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), which sold for $11,162.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic 1937 Proof Set, the five coin set, all certified by NGC including: Centavo Proof 63 RB NGC; 5 Centavos Proof 64; 10 Centavos Proof 64; 25 Centavos Proof 66 Cameo and 50 Centavos Proof 64, all ex: Whittier Collection. A choice selection with brilliant silver types, very rare as a set and a centerpiece for any collection of Dominican Republic." The specimen shown was struck for the Dominican Republic during the early years of the regime of Rafael Trujillo, among the more brutal of Latin America's long roll of bloodthirsty dictators. Soon after his assassination in 1961, the capital, which he had renamed Ciudad Trujillo, reverted to its former name, Santo Domingo. The type was struck 1937-61; this date is scarce in uncirculated but otherwise common.
