Saxe-Weimar 1616-WA thaler Dav-7529
This specimen was lot 55752 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxe-Weimar. Taler, 1616-WA. Saalfeld Mint. Johann Ernst IV, with his seven brothers. PCGS EF-40. From the Collection of Richard Evans Norton (1872-1946)." This type was struck 1612-16 in Saxe-Weimar and is among the more common thalers of the period. The eight brothers depicted were co-rulers of the tiny state; the last one, William IV, died in 1662.
