Jean Elsen sale 145, lot 1042

This specimen was lot 1042 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €2,200 (about US$3,135 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XII (1498-1515), AV écu d'or au soleil de Bretagne, Rennes. 1er type. D/ Ecu de France couronné, sous un soleil, entre deux mouchetures d'hermine couronnées. R/ Croix fleurdelisée, cantonnée de quatre mouchetures d'hermine couronnées. Rare. Très Beau à Superbe. Provient de Spink, Londres, mars 2002. (kingdom of France, Louis XII (1498-1515), gold écu of the sunburst of Brittany, Rennes mint. Obverse: crowned arms of France between two ermines; reverse: floriate cross cantonned with four crowned ermines. Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This coin had a face value of 36 sols, 3 deniers tournois. The crowned ermines were the symbol of Brittany, at that time a semi-independent duchy.
