This specimen was lot 12691 in Heritage sale 339 (Orlando, FL, January 2004), where it sold for $5,462.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Felipe V gold Cob 8 Escudos 1744-FS, crude VF-XF with a perfectly centered, full date in the reverse legend! A very rare type in any condition, this example is certainly among the most desirable due to the incredibly prominent date. The obverse is quite bold on the shield and the S to the right is clear. A true prize for the advanced collector of Latin America." This type is listed for 1736-46 with all dates marked as rare. Milled coinage of gold commenced in 1756.
