Utrecht 1608 cavalier d'or Fr-286
This specimen was lot 496 in Schulman sale 347 (Amsterdam, April 2015), where it sold for €2,200 (about US$2,832 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "grote oude gouden rijder. 1608. type i op groot plaatje. Ruiter naar rechts boven hollands wapenschild . MO• AV• PRO• CONF - OE• BELG TRAIEC stadsschild. Kz. generaliteitswapen . CONCORDIA• RES• PARVÆ• CRESCVNT • jaartal. RR. Vrijwel prachtig." The cavalier d'or was struck by Utrecht (shown here), Overijssel (KM 16, struck 1606 and 1616-20), Holland (KM 19, struck 1606-32), Gelderland (KM 18, struck 1606-28), Friesland (KM 25, struck 1607-28), Westfriesland (KM 27, struck 1621-27), Zeeland (KM 18, sporadic issues 1606-44) and Zwolle (KM 51, 1644 only). Despite what seems to be an extensive issue the coin is rare from any province. Utrecht may be the commonest as it is the only issue with a photo in the SCWC.
Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.
Specification: 10 g, .920 fine gold, this specimen 9.58 g.
