Saxony 1597-HB thaler Dav-9820
This specimen was lot 1632 in Sincona sale 22 (Zurich, May 2015), where it sold for 180 CHF (about US$226 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Sachsen, ab 1547 Kurfürstentum, Christian II., Johann Georg und August unter Vormundschaft, 1591-1611 Taler 1597. Dresden. Gutes sehr schön. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, Christian II, John George and Augustus under regency (1591-1611), thaler of 1597, Dresden mint, good very fine.)"
This type was struck in 1592-1601 for dukes Christian II, Johann Georg and August of Saxony. The SCWC notes that this type was struck by the regent Friedrich Wilhelm von Saxe-Altenburg on behalf of the three young brothers shown on the obverse. Davenport has assigned number 9820 to the 1592-1600 issue and number 7557 to the 1601 issue but they are the same type. The coin is common for the era.
