This specimen was lot 787 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €9,500 (about US$12,272 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG-CELLE, FÜRSTENTUM Christian Ludwig, 1648-1665. Löser zu 3 Reichstalern 1657, Clausthal. Ausbeute der Harzer Gruben. Mit Wertpunze. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Prachtvolle Patina, winz. Kratzer, vorzüglich. (Germany, principality of Brunswick-Lüneburg-Celle, Christian Louis, 1648-65, triple thaler of 1657, Clausthal mint, for the Harz mines, with denomination punched in. Rare in this grade, beautiful patina, minor scratches, extremely fine.)"
The Duchy of Brunswick was divided and subdivided in the seventeenth century but was eventually reassembled as the Kingdom of Hannover before being absorbed into Prussia in 1866. The Brunswick dukes seem to have become enamored of multiple thalers and issued more different types than any other locale.
