Künker sale 384, lot 2745

This specimen was lot 2745 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €340 (about US$439 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"Markus Sittikus von Hohenems, 1612-1619. Reichstalerklippe 1614. R Fassungsspuren, sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Bankhaus Partin 29, München 1989, Nr. 871. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Mark Sittich of Hohenems, 1612-19, klippe thaler of 1614. Rare, traces of tooling, very fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck in round (KM 38) and klippe format 1614-19. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
