Künker sale 384, lot 3184

This specimen was lot 3184 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,585 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Hieronymus von Colloredo, 1772-1803. Dukat 1772. Mit geteilter Jahreszahl. GOLD. RR Attraktives Exemplar, vorzüglich. Erworben bei der Firma Schwaighofer, Salzburg. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Hieronymus von Colloredo, 1772-1803, ducat of 1772, with divided date. Very rare, attractive example, extremely fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck 1772-86 for Hieronymus von Colloredo. It is probably the most common gold coin from this state altho this is a scarce date. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1813.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.44 g.

Catalog reference: KM 437; Fr-880; Probszt 2387; Zöttl 3134 (Type 1 a).
