Brabant 1586(h) ecu Dav-8637
This specimen was lot 1279 in Jean Elsen sale 154 (Brussels, March 2023), where it sold for €280 (about US$363 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe II (1555-1598), restauré, AR écu Philippe, 1586, Anvers. D/ B. cuir. à g. R/ Ecu couronné avec écusson de Portugal en surtout, sur une croix de Bourgogne, entre deux briquets, portant le bijou de la Toison d'or. G.H. 210-1h; Delm. 18; W. 833; V.H. 362. 33,21 g. Flan large. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Philip II, 1555-98, restored, silver écu Philippe of 1586, Antwerp mint. Obverse: armored bust left; reverse: crowned arms with the escutcheon of Portugal over a Burgundian cross between two firesteels bearing the jewels of the Golden Fleece. Large planchet, Very Fine.)"
This type was struck 1585-92, 1595-98. It varied from the earlier écu Philippe (Dav-8634) by having the arms of Portugal added.
