Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 578

This specimen was lot 578 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €2,350 (about US$3,115 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Les Etats en révolte (1577-1581), AV couronne d'or, 1580, Anvers. Frappée sous l'autorité des Etats de Brabant. D/ Croix fleurdelisée, cantonnée de deux lions et de deux briquets. R/ Ecu couronné, accosté de P-P. Rare Fine craquelure du flan au revers. Avec cantonnement inversé au droit. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, state's revolt of 1577-81, gold crown of 1580, Antwerp mint, struck under the authority of the Estates of Brabant; Obverse: floriate cross, cantonned with two lions and two briquets; reverse: crowned arms divide "P-P". Rare, die breaks on the reverse, with reversed lions and flowers on the obverse. Very Fine.)"

This rare type was issued during one of the innumerable revolts against Spanish authority in the sixteenth century.
