Jean Elsen sale 154, lot 1323

This specimen was lot 1323 in Jean Elsen sale 154 (Brussels, March 2023), where it sold for €650 (about US$842 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ARTOIS, Comté, Philippe IV (1621-1640), Cu gigot, 1629, Arras. D/ Croix de Bourgogne sous une couronne, accostée de la date. R/ Ecu couronné. Très rare. Très Beau. (county of Artois, Philip IV, 1621-40, copper gigot of 1629, Arras mint. Obverse: Burgundian cross under a crown divides the date; reverse: crowned arms. Very rare, very Fine.)"

According to the SCWC, this type was struck 1627-28, 1638-40. A gigot was half a liard. Artois was conquered by France in 1640 and was formally ceded by Spain in 1659.
