Áureo y Calicó sale 345, lot 368
Kaufbeuren in 1547, between Kempten and Biberach, from Putzger's Atlas

This specimen was lot 368 in Áureo y Calicó sale 345 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €400 (about US$528 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1548. Carlos I. Kaufbeumen. 1 escudo/taler. Ex Colección Rocaberti, Áureo 19/05/1992, nº 124. Ex Colección Balsach. MBC. (Germany, city of Kaufbeuren, thaler of 1548, very fine."

This obscure Swabian town is of no interest to numismatists except for a series of thalers (Dav-9344 thru -9355) struck 1540-52. These were struck nearly a century before its much larger neighbor, Augsburg, struck any thalers. The region is now part of Bavaria.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28,49 g.

Catalog reference: Dav-9351, Ha. 2366 var.
