The specimen shown is an example of a type struck in Santiago, Chile, since 1992. The escudo itself was abandoned in 1975 for a return to the peso, with 1 new peso = 100 escudos. This design replaced a larger version of 1988-92 (see the 1989 peso). The effigy of Bernardo O'Higgins, hero of the struggle for independence, was first used on copper pesos of the 1940's.
