The specimen shown is an example of a type struck in Santiago, Chile, since 1992. The escudo itself was abandoned in 1975 for a return to the peso, with 1 new peso = 100 escudos. This design replaced a larger version of 1988-92 (see the 1989 peso). The effigy of Bernardo O'Higgins, hero of the struggle for independence, was first used on copper pesos of the 1940's. This design may still be in production; 2013 is the most recent date in the SCWC but Numista shows a 2015. We doubt it still circulates; as of October 2024, US$1 = 928 Chilean pesos.

Recorded mintage: 122,000,000.

Specification: 0.70 g, Aluminum, 16.14 mm diameter, eight sided.

Catalog reference: KM 231.
