Chile 1998 peso rev DSLR.jpg

The specimen shown is an example of a type struck in Santiago, Chile, since 1992. The escudo itself was abandoned in 1975 for a return to the peso, with 1 new peso = 100 escudos.

This design replaced a larger version of 1988-92 (see the 1989 peso). The effigy of Bernardo O'Higgins, hero of the struggle for independence, was first used on copper pesos of the 1940's.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: .70 g, Aluminum, 16.14 mm diameter, 8-sided.

Catalog reference: KM 231.
