Hall 1777-K-R 1/2 thaler
The first specimen was lot 508 in Stack's Coin Galleries sale (New York, October 2010), where it sold for $546.25. The catalog description[1] noted,
"GERMAN STATES. SCHWABISH HALL. Freie Reichsstadt. 1/2 Taler, 1777 OE-K-R. Cuirassed bust r. Rv. Three ornate shields make up Arms. A very low mintage Convention Taler, one of only 437 minted. Areas of deep charcoal toning, light hairlines from old cleaning. A rare and important type. Choice Very Fine."
The second specimen was lot 1112 in Goldberg's NY International sale 58 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,140. The catalog description[2] noted, "German States: Hall in Swabia. ½ Taler, 1777-OE KR. Three shields in sprays, K (N) R below. Rev. Bust of Joseph II right, OEXLIEIN.F below. Lovely brilliant mirror-like surfaces with light original gray toning. Rare this nice. In PCGS holder graded MS 61." All the issues of the free city of Hall (also called Schwabisch Hall to distinguish it from other towns of the same name) are scarce. This is a product of the Nuremberg mint, along with the similar thaler (Dav-2280) and ducat (Fr-1083). The town was annexed to Wurttemberg in 1803.
