Sincona sale 80, lot 2257

This specimen was lot 2257 in Sincona sale 80 (Zurich, October 2022), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$300 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"GERMANY | Passau | Bistum, Raymund Ferdinand von Rabatta, 1713-1722. 1/4 Taler 1717, Augsburg. Vorzüglich. Feine Patina. Randfehler. (bishopric of Passau, Raymund Ferdinand von Rabatta, 1713-22, quarter thaler of 1717, Augsburg mint. Extremely fine, Nicely toned, Edge flaw.)"

The Bishopric of Passau, between Bavaria and Austria, occasionally struck coinage in the eighteenth century, all now scarce. The state fell to Bavaria during the Napoleonic upheavals and is now part of Germany.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 7.27 g.

Catalog reference: KM 63, Kellner 162.
