Sincona sale 59, lot 1637

This specimen was lot 1637 in Sincona sale 59 (Zurich, October 2019), where it sold for 120 CHF (about US$145 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"ITALY | Milan, Gian Galeazzo Visconti, 1385-1402. Pegione o. J. Hübsche Erhaltung. Vorzüglich. (Italy, duchy of Milan, Gian Galeazzo Visconti, 1385-1402, undated pegione. Nice condition, Extremely fine.)"

The Visconti family ruled Milan 1277-1447 and left a deep mark on the history of the city. The city today still uses the Visconti arms of a crowned snake swallowing a child as its badge. The reverse features St. Ambrose, the first archbishop of Milan. The pegione was issued in large numbers by Milan and was roughly equal to the Venetian silver grosso.
