Mansfeld-Eigentliche-Hinterort 1623-AK thaler Dav-6987
This specimen was lot 1185 in Stephen Album sale 32 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2018), where it sold for $470. The catalog description[1] noted, "MANSFELD: David, 1592-1628, AR spruchthaler, 1623, initials A - K, Eigentliche Hinterort Line issue, mount expertly removed, one-year type, VF to EF, S. Checking all the prominent search outlets, we have found no record for the sale of this type." Mansfeld-Eigentliche-Hinterort was a county of utmost insignificance in Germany except for its silver mines which provided the material for an abundance of thalers. Duke David ruled 1592-1628 and Frederick Christopher 1609-31; the line went extinct in 1666. This type is rarer than most Mansfeld thalers. It is noted as a mule tho, given that most Mansfeld thalers look alike, it would be difficult to tell.
