Stack's Bowers 2017 ANA sale, lot 21102
I of Man SB517-21102r.jpg

This specimen was lot 21102 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $9,987.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "ISLE OF MAN. 5 Crown, 1990. Authorized mintage of only 199 pieces, but according to the Krause book the estimated mintage was only 99 pieces. With case of issue and certificate of authenticity. GEM BRILLIANT PROOF." The Isle of Man lies in the Irish Sea between Britain and Ireland and remains a British dependency. It is famous for motorcycle racing and tailless cats. Token coppers were issued for the island in the eighteenth century but large production did not commence until 1971. About 1980, the island fell under the domination of the Pobjoy Mint, which has minted and marketed dozens of NCLT commemoratives. The one crown version of this design was struck in multiple formats, from copper-nickel to platinum. It honored the first postage stamp, the Penny Black.

Recorded mintage: 99.

Specification: 155.5 g, 0.999 fine gold, 50 mm diameter, 5 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 1501.
