Isle of Man 1990 crown KM-267
This specimen was lot 71266 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "ISLE OF MAN. Crown, 1990. Elizabeth II. PCGS GEM PROOF Deep Cameo. A 1 Ounce Gold, high relief issue, with a rendition of a One Penny postage stamp. A brilliant and attractive coin with dark, reflective fields and frosty central devices." The Isle of Man lies in the Irish Sea between Britain and Ireland and remains a British dependency. It is famous for motorcycle racing and tailless cats. Token coppers were issued for the island in the eighteenth century but large production did not commence until 1971. About 1980, the island fell under the domination of the Pobjoy Mint, which has minted and marketed dozens of NCLT commemoratives. This NCLT was struck in multiple formats, from copper-nickel to platinum. It honored the first postage stamp, the Penny Black.
Recorded mintage: unknown + 50,000 proofs in copper-nickel plus 30,000 proofs in sterling silver plus an estimated 1,000 in gold plus 50 in platinum.
