Isle of Man 1990 2 crowns
This specimen was lot 34001 in Heritage sale 3098 (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $4,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "Isle of Man: British Colony. Elizabeth II gold Proof 2 Crowns (2 oz) 1990 Gem Proof NGC, Pobjoy mint. Commemorates the 150th anniversary of the penny black stamp." The Isle of Man lies in the Irish Sea between Britain and Ireland and remains a British dependency. It is famous for motorcycle racing and tailless cats. Token coppers were issued for the island in the eighteenth century but large production did not commence until 1971. About 1980, the island fell under the domination of the Pobjoy Mint, which has minted and marketed dozens of NCLT commemoratives. The one crown version of this design was struck in multiple formats, from copper-nickel to platinum. It honored the first postage stamp, the Penny Black.
