Jean Elsen sale 152, lot 1709

This specimen was lot 1709 in Jean Elsen sale 152 (Brussels, September 2022), where it sold for €150 (about US$181 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"CUBA, République (1902-), AR 50 pesos (5 oz), 1990. Christophe Colomb. 2000 p. frappées. Flan poli. (republic of Cuba, silver fifty pesos (five troy oz) of 1990, Christopher Columbus, 2000 pieces struck. Proof.)"

After the release of many self-congratulatory NCLT's was greeted by disinterest from the world at large, the regime switched to less political topics such as sports and history. A large series of 1990-92 was devoted to the discovery of the New World.

Recorded mintage: 2,000 proofs.

Specification: 62.2 g, 0.999 fine silver, 2.00 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 294.
