Jean Elsen sale 144, lot 1694

This specimen was lot 1694 in Jean Elsen sale 144 (Brussels, March 2020), where it sold for €850 (about US$1,120 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AV demi-louis d'or à l'écu, 1691N, Montpellier. 1e réformation. D/ T. vieillie à d., coiffée d'une perruque laurée. R/ Ecu de France couronné. Rare Fines griffes. Très Beau à Superbe (kingdom of France, Louis XVI, 1643-1715, gold half louis of the shield of 1691, Montpellier mint, first reformation. Obverse: old laureate and peruked head right; reverse: crowned arms of France. Rare, light scratches, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

The demi-louis d'or is much scarcer than its larger brother, tho this type, the demi-louis d'or a l'écu, turns up occasionally. It was issued 1690-1693.

Recorded mintage: unknown; an unlisted date[2].

Specification: 3.37 g, 0.917 fine gold, 20-21 mm diameter, reeded edge, this specimen 3,34 g.
