G128-1259r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1259 in Goldberg sale 128 (Los Angeles, June 2022), where it sold for $990. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. Louis d'or au soleil, 1713-G (Poitiers). Louis XIV. Mintage 8,821. PCGS graded About Uncirculated Detail (Cleaned)." This type was struck 1709-15 in some numbers but it is scarce today. It was the last louis of Louis XIV. Its initial face value was 16 livres 10 sols tournois, later increased to 20 livres. The mintage reported below may be compared with that of Paris, which reported 244,863 examples for the year.

Recorded mintage: 8,821, a better date[2].

Specification: 8.15 g, .917 fine gold, 24-26 mm diameter, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 417, Dr/2 no. 278, Dupl. 1449; Fr-444; Gad-256; KM-390.6.
