Malawi, formerly the British colony of Nyasaland, obtained her independence in 1964. She has escaped the incessant violence besetting many African nations but has been ravaged by AIDS. This type was issued in 1971 on the occasion of the conversion from sterling to decimal coinage. It is accompanied by one, two, five, ten and twenty tambala, all common.

Recorded mintage: 20,000 plus 4,000 proofs.

Specification: copper-nickel, 38.8 mm diameter.
