The first specimen was lot 72108 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "MALAWI. 6 Pence, 1967. London or Llantrisant Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-66 Gold Shield. Soft, satiny surfaces and a great lustrous brilliance highlight this exceptional Gem issue, exceeded in the PCGS population report by just two examples. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." The second specimen was lot 73562 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $65. The catalog description[2] noted, "MALAWI. 6 Pence, 1967. PCGS SPECIMEN-66 Gold Shield. The second and final year in a brief two-year series, this brilliant and highly mirrored minor stands as one of the finest seen at PCGS, as the firm has graded just four finer. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." Malawi, formerly the British colony of Nyasaland, obtained her independence in 1964. She has escaped the incessant violence besetting many African nations but has been ravaged by AIDS. This is from a series of sterling coinage issued 1964-68. The coinage was decimalized in 1971.
