The first specimen was lot 24380 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $1,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 250 Kwacha 1978, MS66 NGC, Conservation Series featuring a pair of Nyala deer." Malawi, formerly the British colony of Nyasaland, obtained her independence in 1964. She has escaped the incessant violence besetting many African nations but has been ravaged by AIDS. It seems unlikely that many of these coins remain in Malawi. The nyala is an antelope, not a deer.

Recorded mintage: 566 plus 208 proofs.

Specification: 33.437 g, 0.900 fine gold, .967 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 17.
