Stack's Bowers May 2025 Collectors Choice Online Auction, lot 75510
SB525-75510r.jpg

This specimen was lot 75510 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2025), where it sold for $6,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "MALAWI. 10 Kwacha, 1985. NGC PROOF-69 Ultra Cameo." The portrait is of Hastings Banda (1898-1997), president and Big Man of Malawi 1966-94. At present (April 2024) US$1 = 1,740 kwacha; in 1982, US$1 = 0.94 kwacha. Both the silver and gold versions of this NCLT were struck at the Royal Mint. Malawi, formerly the British colony of Nyasaland, obtained her independence in 1964. She has escaped the incessant violence besetting many African nations but has been ravaged by AIDS. It seems unlikely that many of these coins remain in Malawi.

Recorded mintage: 4,000 in silver plus 50 in gold.

Specifications: 28.28 g, 0.925 fine silver, 38.6 mm diameter. KM 18a: 47.54 g, 0.917 fine gold, 1.4016 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: silver version: KM 18; gold version: Fr-3; KM-18a.
