Utrecht 1620 cavalier d'or Fr-286
This specimen was lot 30336 in Heritage sale 3097 (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $15,600. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Netherlands: Utrecht. Provincial gold Cavalier d'Or 1620 MS62 NGC, Utrecht mint. By all indications a very rare date for the issue, unrecorded by Delmonte as a standard striking at the time that his work was originally published in 1964, and not updated until his supplement appeared in 1978. To date, this is only the second such example we have handled--the last being an AU Details (Mount Removed)--with just a handful having come to auction in the meantime. Upon close inspection, the offering appears strikingly close to Choice Mint State, few stray marks occurring over the surfaces, although clear die stress is present over the obverse scene. From the WTR Collection."
The cavalier d'or was struck by Utrecht (shown here, struck 1606-08 and 1614-24), Overijssel (KM 16, struck 1606 and 1616-20), Holland (KM 19, struck 1606-32), Gelderland (KM 18, struck 1606-28), Friesland (KM 25, struck 1607-28), Westfriesland (KM 27, struck 1621-27), Zeeland (KM 18, sporadic issues 1606-44) and Zwolle (KM 51, 1644 only). Despite what seems to be an extensive issue the coin is rare from any province. Utrecht may be the commonest as it is the only issue with a photo in the SCWC.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 10 g, 0.920 fine gold, this specimen 9.91 g.
