Goldberg sale 78, lot 3423

This specimen was lot 3423 in Goldberg sale 78 (Los Angeles, January 2014), where it sold for $223. The catalog description[1] noted, "Italy. Lira, 1899-R. Umberto I. NGC graded MS-63." This type was struck at the Rome mint 1883-86, 1892 and 1899-1900 and is common in circulated condition. The 1887-M lira from Milan is by far the commonest date.

Recorded mintage: 1,818,216.

Specification: 5 g, .835 fine silver, .134 troy oz ASW, 23 mm diameter, lettered edge.
