The first specimen was lot 39334 in Stack's Bowers Winter sale (Baltimore, November 2015), where it sold for $1,057.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1607/GRATIA-MoF. Philip III (1598-1621). NGC VF-20. A reasonably round example of this highly sought after early cob coinage, the first year these were dated. Date is clearly visible. It is interesting to note that all 1607 coinage of Mexico was manufactured from recut dies of the undated type. Consequently, all 1607 coinage of Mexico is 1607 over 'GRATIA'. Evenly toned and without ever having seen seawater. Nice. Pedigree: From the David O'Harrow Collection." The second specimen was lot 31520 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[2] noted, "Philip III 8 Reales ND (1598-1621) Mo-F AU55 NGC. A bold strike with strong centers and good toning." This type is the first to bear dates. In 1728, cobs were debased from .931 to .917 fine silver.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 grams, .931 fine silver, .810 troy oz ASW, this specimen 27.0 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-4865, Cal-type-49#97; KM-44.3; Calb-620.
