This specimen was lot 70556 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/2 Sol, 1769-)(. Besancon Mint. Louis XV. PCGS AU-53. A decently struck piece with a warm brown patina. A lovely example of this copper issue." The specimen shown is a demi-sol à la vieille tête minted at Besançon 1769-72 at the end of the reign of Louis XV. Eleven other mints struck this type. Its face value was six deniers, half a sol or 1/240 of a silver écu. The type is common in low grade (the SCWC values it at $4 in VG) but well made specimens are scarce. The Besançon mint was closed in 1772 along with Troyes and Dijon.

Recorded mintage: unknown but not rare.

Specification: copper, 6.12 g, 24-25 mm diameter, plain edge.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 868, Dr/2 no. 580, KM-544.12.
