France 1769-CC 1/2 sol

from the Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70556

This specimen was lot 70556 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $85. The catalog description^[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/2 Sol, 1769-)(. Besancon Mint. Louis XV. PCGS AU-53. A decently struck piece with a warm brown patina. A lovely example of this copper issue." The specimen shown is a demi-sol à la vieille tête minted at Besançon 1769-72 at the end of the reign of Louis XV. Eleven other mints struck this type. Its face value was six deniers, half a sol or 1/240 of a silver écu. The type is common in low grade (the SCWC values it at $4 in VG) but well made specimens are scarce. The Besançon mint was closed in 1772 along with Troyes and Dijon.

Recorded mintage: unknown but not rare.

Specification: copper, 6.12 g, 24-25 mm diameter, plain edge.
