Mauritius 1971 1/4 rupee

from the Stack's Bowers June 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73569

This specimen was lot 73569 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $115. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MAURITIUS. 1/4 Rupee, 1971. PCGS SPECIMEN-67 Gold Shield. Steely gray and incredibly vibrant, this radiant specimen is clearly one of the finest which one will encounter. Rather unsurprisingly, PCGS has graded just one higher. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." This type was struck 1960, 1964-65, 1970-71, 1975 and 1978. It has a low catalog value and only the King's Norton mint provenance saved this specimen from being tossed into a junk box.

Recorded Mintage: 540,000 plus 750 proofs.

Specification: 2.95 g, copper-nickel, 19 mm diameter.
