Mauritius 1971 cent
This specimen was lot 73134 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $95. The catalog description[1] noted, "MAURITIUS. Cent, 1971. Kings Norton Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-67 Gold Shield. A stunningly vibrant and lustrous Gem, this alluring example presents a full mint red to dazzle the eye. Tied with just two other specimens for the finest in the PCGS census. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." The second specimen was lot 73571 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $204. The catalog description[2] noted, "MAURITIUS. Cent, 1971. PCGS SPECIMEN-66 Red Gold Shield. Just four have been graded finer than this dazzling Gem--emanating from the antepenultimate year of issue for the type. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." This type was struck 1953-65, 1969-71, 1975, 1978. It has a low catalog value and only the King's Norton mint provenance saved this specimen from being tossed into a junk box.
