Salzburg 1789-M thaler Dav-1265

from the Stack's Bowers June 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70320

This specimen was lot 70320 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $360. The catalog description^[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Salzburg. Taler, 1789. Hieronymus von Colloredo. PCGS AU-58 Gold Shield. Exceptionally wholesome and sporting a deep cabinet tone, this alluring crown retains a great deal of shimmering brilliance remaining in the protected areas." This convention thaler was struck for the archbishop 1789-1801. It is common. The Archbishop is most remembered as the first patron of Mozart but grew irritable when Mozart demanded better status than a mere employee.
