Áureo y Calicó sale 347, lot 257

This specimen was lot 257 in Áureo y Calicó sale 347 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,584 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1747. Fernando VI. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino. (S). 2 escudos. Leones y castillos. Muy rara. Sólo hemos tenido este ejemplar. EBC-. (kingdom of Spain, Ferdinand VI, two escudos of 1747, Nuevo Reino mint, lions and castles. Very rare, we know of this example only. About extremely fine.)"

This type is listed for 1747-56 with all dates marked as rare as most known specimens don't have legible dates. We aren't sure how the cataloguers decided that this is an issue of Ferdinand and not Philip. Milled coinage of gold commenced in 1755.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 6.77 g, .917 fine gold, this specimen 6,72 g.

Catalog reference: AC. 665, Restrepo M94-2, KM 25, Fr-13, Cayón-unlisted.
