The first specimen was lot 1302 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $665.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL, Republic. 1889-1930. AR 400 Réis. Rio de Janeiro mint. Dually dated 1500 and 1900. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 65. Very moderately toned gem uncirculated. Only one specimen graded higher in 66. One year only type. Purchased from D. J. Crowther, September 1969." This one year type was issued as part of a set of commemoratives including a 1000, 2000 and 4000 réis. This is the most common of the set yet this specimen realized over five times the catalog value. In 1901, the denomination was converted from silver to copper-nickel.

Recorded mintage: 55,000.

Specification: 5.10 g, .917 fine silver, this specimen Ø22 mm, 5.18 g, 12h axis.

Catalog reference: KM 499.
