This specimen was lot 1662 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabruck, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,044 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"KAISERREICH ÖSTERREICH, Franz Josef I. 1848-1916. Dukat 1866, E, Karlsburg. GOLD. Sehr schön. (empire of Austria, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, ducat of 1866, Karlsburg mint. Very fine.)"
This type was issued in 1866 from the Karlsburg mint during the reign of Emperor Francis Joseph of Austria. This type was also minted at Vienna, Kremnitz (Komoczbanya in Magyar) and Venice and is often catalogued under Austria. After the reorganization of the Hapsburg empire into the Dual Monarchy in 1867, Hungary received her own coinage separate from Austrian issues. In the aftermath of World War One, the Hapsburg monarchy collapsed and Hungary became independent but without its former territories in Slovakia, Transylvania and Croatia.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3,44 g in gold.
